CHINGOZINE 2 ARTIST: ALEXIS HERRERA
Alexis Herrera is a native Texan artist who is a connoisseur of zines, comics, toys, Son Jarocho, and photography. In Austin, most know Herrera for her part in the Son Jarocho movement, a popular education-based art form centered around community gatherings & celebrations known as Fandangos. The Fandango involves music, dancing, & poetry in the context of a communally created and shared space, with the tarima (a wooden dance platform) as the gathering point. For me, the most interesting aspects of Herrera’s multitude of admirable qualities is not only her ability to be a creator of such aforementioned viewer-driven sensorial experiences but it is among her private journals, diaries, and polaroids that one uncovers her ability to poignantly accent and recognize an image’s ability to traverse a multi-dimensionality that both abstracts and captures the reality of its creator. Thank you Alexis for your vision, and welcome to the ChingoZine family!
